Water pollution is at its worst in India. The Ganges River, a holy river that was once pure Himalayan Mountain water has turned into a slimy monstrosity. If we were to look at any other river in the world, the Ganges would be the most polluted by quite the margin. Let’s take a look into the Ganges water.
To start off, there may be traces of ashes thrown in to the river. This is a part of the Hindu religion which allows the dead to be cleansed of their wrong-doings and reach moksha (which relieves you from the cycle of rebirth). Along with the concept of religion, many also pollute the river by bathing in it. The Ganges is part of a pilgrimage where many Hindu’s go in order to complete their faith and gain good karma. Hinduism, when compared to the other religions in the world, ranks as the third largest religion with roughly 1 billion followers. This means that roughly 1 billion people have bathed in the sacred Ganges. Increasing the water pollution is the sewage dumps into the river. There are chemicals inside in the waste that make the living conditions in the river unbearable. This means that there is no wildlife whatsoever in the river (besides humans of course). Speaking of these humans, 99.3 million people live without purified water in India. 186,000 children under the age of five die which is sourced back to unsafe water digestion. The issue can be resolved. To sum up the ongoing project, companies and groups are attempting to improve education on the water pollution in the Ganges, and other Indian rivers as well. They are trying to block off direct sewage ports into the river and pass laws on waste dumping. Nonetheless, religion blocks the project. People are not going to stop practicing their beliefs in which were done for thousands of years just because of pollution. This is why the water pollution problem is getting tragically worse, along with India's unyielding population. |
