Overview
According to the Oxford dictionary, pollution is defined as the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects. Pollution continues to be an alarming, accumulating problem India. India has created many factories in an attempt to modernize and advance the country; however, it has only made their pollution worse, giving them one of the worst air qualities in the world. With a mixture of old and new traditions, alternative, Eco-friendly methods need to be made in order to clean India's environment. India is a nation striving to modernize and develop, yet in order to achieve their goals, they have to face the huge problem of pollution and their environment. |
Some say that keeping old traditions while advancing into the future technologically is a advantageous; however, it has caused many problems in India, creating a lot of air pollution. These old traditions have also negatively impacted the Ganges river, with it's ruined fish supply, making it one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Deforestation has impacted India greatly as well, where there used to be 14.8 billion acres of land that was forested, but recently has declined nearly in half to 8.6 billion acres. The effects of air pollution are so devastating that it has risen to become the fifth largest killer in India, taking hundreds of millions of lives. The question still lingers: what does the future hold for India, and is it to late to clean up their polluted actions?

The map above shows the main of air sources of pollution in India. Most of these cities are coastal cities and cities with very high populations such as Delhi. Although it is not showing water pollution or deforestation, it is interesting that where there is not air pollution, there is water pollution, specifically in the Ganges Plain and River area. Along with that thought, where there is not air pollution or water pollution, there is deforestation, especially in central India. To no surprise, the areas with neither of the three pollution problems is Kashmir region, where there is the mountains and mountain ranges such as the Himalayas.
